The report ‘After Silence’ prepared by CIMA, a pioneer in Spain, highlights sexual violence and abuse of power in the audiovisual industry through data and anonymous testimonies. It is aimed at professionals around the world as a tool for reflection and action to move towards an industry free of violence.
The authors Nerea Barjola Ramos and Bárbara Tardón Recio analyze in depth the working conditions of the sector and how precariousness, power dynamics, and many invisible relationships make vulnerability a constant in the industry.
Among the conclusions of the report is that 60.3% of women in the sector have suffered sexual violence, but 92% of them have not reported it. It emphasizes that there are “high levels of impunity,” with violence spread throughout all phases of work, from castings and academic training to festivals and other forms of distribution. Violence remains in the foundations of the industry, a system of impunity where precarious work, dependence on interpersonal relationships, and punishment of those who report it keep women silenced in the face of the established power.
Publicly presented in April 2025 with the presence of the Minister of Equality Ana Redondo and several relevant institutions in the sector, this is a rigorous investigation that contributes to formulating effective strategies and tools in the prevention and eradication of sexual violence.
Funded by the Ministry of Equality, the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, and the Women’s Institute, the report includes recommendations to align the action of different state ministries, autonomous communities, film academies, companies, festivals, and organizations in the sector.
