In 2023, the Respect group brought together around thirty independent professionals from the French audiovisual industry for six months in a weekly process of active listening and collective work addressing sexual violence in the film sector. Based on the exchange of experiences and testimonies, the group produced a report with proposals directed at companies, unions, insurance providers, and public administrations to structurally transform practices in the sector.
These sessions served as a space for analysis and development of measures, organized around two main areas: the requirement for a respect charter common to the entire sector and the creation of a certification for productions, ensuring work environments free from violence at all stages of film development.
Published in 2024, the report presents a comprehensive approach to the necessary measures, from prevention and awareness-raising in schools, the drafting of codes of conduct at each stage of the process, to the incorporation of intimacy coordinators and mediating figures at different hierarchical levels. Its scope also extends to post-production, with guidance on how to manage the promotion of films in which abuse has occurred to prevent these incidents from becoming an element of media exploitation.
The document also includes a protocol for action in cases of sexual violence during a production, with guidelines for investigating incidents and guiding the response when the director is involved. It concludes with an evaluation proposal, the first outline of the certification that the group proposes for French productions.
